Hangover.

1 min read
Ouch.
Cassie cringed as the dishwasher clattered shut. The crash of plates and mugs made her head throb wildly, and her eyes swam for a couple of seconds. Nicole's birthday party had been a little crazier than planned, and Cassie seriously regretted participating in the shots-fest that she'd been partly bullied into.
"Cassie!" she heard Gavin call from the kitchen, "There's a customer out the front!"
She grunted in response and walked as fast as she could into the main part of the cafe, trying not to wobble over and fall flat on her face. She rested her hands on the counter to try and maintain her balance, and needed as much effort as she could muster to put on her customer smile.
"Good morning. What can I get for you?"

"Careful, Nicole! You're almost standing on Tash's hand!" Cassie laughed, watching her flatmates as they tangled themselves into a human knot of alcohol-affected limbs. It was a girl's night in, and the wine was flowing more easily than it should have. Even Cassie (who rarely ever had a proper drink) was on her third glass of "Tesco's Finest" Merlot.
The doorbell sang unexpectedly through their giggling, and they all glanced at each other. They hadn't been expecting anyone- or at least, they thought they hadn't.
Tammy's face lit up with realization. "Oh, it's ok. I asked someone to come over."
Her explanation was answered with a joint oooh! from the others. "Nothing like that!" she laughed, "Cas, go let them in for me, would you? I'm a bit... tangled up."
They all laughed, and Cassie danced down the stairs to the front door. The doorbell rung again.
"Alright, I'm coming!" she said as she opened the door, "Who is it?"

On The Bus

1 min read
As always, the bus was packed. There was a single seat near the back, but the man occupying the other half of it looked a little unsavoury, so Cassie stayed near the front. She was crammed between a banker and a mother with her pram when the bus turned a corner more sharply than she was expecting. She lost her footing and slipped, falling to the floor...
When a hand shot out and caught her wrist.
"Ah! Thank you." Cassie said breathlessly, thanking the person who had caught her.

OK, move that there, put these on top of those...
Cassie pushed her hair back behind her ears again and tried to arrange the sandwiches in 'an aesthetic way', as the boss put it, in order to attract more customers. But she knew only the regulars came to Speedy's. Mr Raymond who always just came in for tea and a chat (bless him, poor lonely man) was her favourite- happy to tell stories of the war and his summer romance with 'pretty Miss Peggy' from America. She smiled fondly at the thought of the old man, but another strand of hair fell in front of her eyes. Cassie blew it out of her face and switched around the tuna with the cheese and ham.
Glad that one job was done, it was time to start another. The tip jar needed emptying and distributing, the tables needed cleaning and the ketchup bottles needed refilling. Ugh. The excitement of city life. Cassie meandered over to the counter, tracing her fingers lightly along the edges of tables and chairs, whistling a non-existent tune.

((Short journal entry is short. Apologies.))
